The Art of Gallery Walls
A gallery is the perfect way to show off a collection of pieces that make you happy! No matter the variation in size, shape, frame, composition... gallery walls add a relaxed - sophistication to a room.
STACK EM' UP
In a narrow space I like to add interest to a wall with a stacked gallery. This not only creates interest at eye level, it brings the eye upwards maximising the use of the space. For the less structured gallery, I like to use a variety of sizes and styles for the frames.
MIXING OLD WITH NEW
Don't be afraid to mix a print with an original, the contrast in mediums can compliment each other. Create tonal balance with the colours represented in the artwork so that they speak to each other on the wall, creating a cohesion between the pieces.
MEASURE TWICE, HANG ONCE
Depending on where the gallery is going, sometimes it pays to have a professional hang the work for you. If an artwork is quite large or heavy, I opt for having a professional hanger come find a solution and do the heavy lifting. However, if you trust your instinct and the pieces are light, grab and hammer and nails and go for it! The beauty of gallery walls is that in most cases there is no structure.
I tend to like a sense of symmetry in my gallery walls, found in the even spacing between pieces on a large wall and lining up edges of ones on a smaller wall.
